I was in a pre-college art class my Senior Year. We had to do a thesis and mine was just this issue #5. It was also submitted to a local art gallery. There these pages hung on their walls, dick jokes and all. Some of the glue they used still remains so you'll notice a yellow tint to the scans.
This was also the year I was applying to colleges. Wizard #44 had a story on the Joe Kubert School and while I had it hanging on my wall, I opted instead for the School of Visual Arts since I had taken a pre college course in film making. I again used this issue #5 as my portfolio to get in, which I did. However, the admissions coordinator was also substituting sometimes in my high school art class so will never know if I got in merely for that connection. Regardless, I went to Iona College and majored in Economics.
Cameo cross-over! No idea why I wanted to change their names slightly like I was going to get sued. Like Chris Carter was going to see this. (Chris, if you are reading this, hit me up.)
This was the high school we went to. The internet had just started and this might be the first photo I printed out for a reference. Also it wasn’t called Woodland High but I needed to make that dick joke.
Cause De Niro is such a common name it wouldn’t be obvious who I was paying homage to.
It gets weird here but I was really trying to crowbar in us being undercover in a high school like 21 Jump Street. It’s where my mind went during school to get me through, like I was there for a better reason.
Also, big shout out to Johnny Byrne.
Modeled after the apartment building my Dad lived in Ardsley NY. I didn’t even change the building name. You might remember Ardsley as one of the baddies from issue #3 and 4 too.
